Superman returns trailer

Superman Returns Trailer analysis:

Synopsis: The movie superman returns is a 2006 American superhero film directed and produced by Bryan Singer. It is based on the DC Comics character Superman and serves as an homage sequel to the movies  Superman  and Superman II , in ignoring the events of Superman III  and Superman. The film stars Brandon Routh as Clark Kent/Superman- the main protagonist, Kate Bosworth as Lois LaneKevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, with James MarsdenFrank Langella, and Parker Posey. The film tells the story of the title character returning to Earth after a five-year absence. He finds that his love interest Lois Lane has moved on with her life, and that his archenemy Lex Luthor is plotting a scheme that will destroy him and the world.

Mise en scene:  Within the movie it is set in metropolis city, a stark contrast to the other city within the dc universe in which batman operates in, Gotham city. While Gotham is dark, dingy and a city sprawling with criminal activity, metropolis has less criminals and is a golden paradise of sorts. The city is based on new York at day while Gotham is based on new York at night. the scenery has many buildings and landmarks which superman is shown flying past in certain scenes, for example in the scene where he flies at supersonic speeds across the ocean, we can see the daily planet building, which has the earth on it, These props and scenery cost a lot of money to introduce into the movie.

the scene where superman picks up the giant island, an carries it overhead into space shows a similarity to the giants causeway, it also is huge in size resembling an entire island after all. The whole scenery in superman is meant to be almost lonely, and glorifying, it shows how a man with immense power tries to fit in with mankind desperately, and yet he is all alone despite his sacrificial love for humanity, the city of metropolis best represents that.

Editing: there has been some editing in the movie for example the superman costume which Brandon dons in the movie was originally meant to look quite different and have a more metallic texture to it, resembling more of a robot. also the scene where superman is flying through the daily planet building, this was originally meant to be a different scene of superman just flying through the ocean, however was put in the movie anyway, a deleted scene in the beginning where superman returns after 5 years was removed from the movie, reasons for this are unknown, the scene detailed superman on the farm throwing a ball to his dog at night, and talking with his adopted mother Martha Kent.

Also when superman is picking up the mountain to take it to space to take it out of harms way, the editing is shown in the shot as superman is first shown struggling then sweat comes down from his forehead, showing the immense effort he puts to perform the herculean feat of strength.

Camera shots and angles: There are several shots and angles in superman returns, a famous shot is the scene where Lois lane is looking out of the plane as if looking for hope, when suddenly superman shows up in a burst of speed, this shows a side shot view of superman. Another shot is where a pov shot is shown when superman presses the island of kryptonite, into space. This shows his facial expression as well and is shown in the shot. More shots include the scene where superman is Lifting the ocean cruiser to save lois, her husband and son, it is shown from his point of  view and also shows a mid-angle shot to show the ocean cruiser tipping out of water, this is accurately and well done, as it gives great effect and shows the amount of power superman really has which is incomprehensible to human minds.

Sound: The sound in the movie is mostly diegetic with some non-diegetic sound, the movie famously consists of john Williams superman theme, this theme is played throughout the movie during several scenes and pretty much every time superman is seen saving someone. the diegetic sounds of people screaming are also prevalent throughout the movie.
